2020/05/16

On May 15, the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Barbados and Chongqing Municipal Government of China held a Video Conference on Sharing Experiences of combating COVID-19. Seven medical experts from Chongqing elaborated on the prevention, diagnosis and clinical management of the pandemic with questions raised by Barbadian doctors earlier in the meeting which was suggested by the Barbadian government. More than 80 officials and medical experts from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners took part in the meeting.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Barbados, H. E. Mr. Yan Xiusheng hosted the video conference call, with Mr. Qu Qian, Deputy Mayor of Chongqing Municipal Government, Deputy Chairman of Chongqing Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference and Mr. Anton Best, Acting Chief Medical Officer, who delivered remarks respectively. Ambassador Yan pointed out in his opening remarks, just as the Chinese President Xi Jinping has indicated, that viruses respect no borders and epidemics do not distinguish between races. Mankind is a community with a shared future. COVID-19 is the enemy for all. No country could stay immune to viruses or fight them alone. The only way to defeat them is through concerted efforts by all. Guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, the Chinese government has acted with openness, transparency and responsibility. China has provided timely updates to the World Health Organization (WHO) and relevant countries and regions, released the genome sequence of the virus at the earliest possible time, and shared control and treatment experience with the rest of the world without reservation.

Although fighting the virus in China remains a formidable task, China has been doing all it could to provide assistance to other countries and actively engage in international cooperation. Mayor Qu conveyed the consolation from the people of Chongqing and introduced the latest progress of combating Covid-19 in Chongqing, where the everyday life of people and the economy are returning to normal. He expressed the strong stand Chongqing would take to support Barbados in fighting against the virus and its willingness to enhance cooperation in the economic and health sectors to jointly face the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Mr. Best thanked Chongqing for the goodwill and the experience sharing in this critical time while Barbados is fighting the virus. Given that Chongqing has already contained the spread of the virus, the experience is very valuable and instructive to medical workers on the front line combating Covid-19. He also appreciated the excellent work of the Chinese Medical Team from Chongqing in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Chinese government has been supporting the efforts of the Barbadian government and its people to fight the pandemic by donating the most needed medical supplies. There have been three batches of donations thus far.
